The Torchbearer

Challenger Seen World Process

Think of a nurse who has taken a campaign for clean water to new towns for twenty years.

One of the sixteen types a reading can name. Begin the reading

The shape

This shape gives years to a cause in the world, carried in the open and taken into new places so that more people pick it up. The cause has no last day, so nothing inside it says when to stop, and working in the open means working in front of anyone who opposes it.

In ordinary life

Lives with this shape

None of these people took the reading. The record of each shows the shape.

Miriam Makeba (1932 to 2008)

Miriam Makeba left South Africa in 1959, spoke against apartheid at the United Nations in 1963, the year her citizenship was taken away, and went on singing and speaking out against it abroad until she returned in 1990. Thirty-one years of carrying one cause from stage to stage, in front of audiences who could take it up, show the shape from outside.

Savitribai Phule (1831 to 1897)

In 1848 Savitribai Phule and her husband Jyotirao opened a school for girls in Pune, and she kept teaching while opponents threw stones and dung at her. The couple went on to open eighteen schools. One cause taken into school after school for decades, in full view and against open hostility, shows the shape from outside.

Closest neighbor

The Lantern shares three of these sides and differs on risk: it stays in one place and remains reliable for the people who count on it, while this shape keeps moving the cause to places it has not reached yet.

One side away

Each shares three sides with this shape. On the right is the side it has instead.
