The Unsung

Challenger Self-sufficient World Arrive

Think of an electrician who fixes a flooded clinic no one would enter, and asks no thanks.

One of the sixteen types a reading can name. Begin the reading

The shape

This shape goes after hard problems out in the world, often ones others have dropped, and stays with each until it works. Who gets thanked afterwards is not part of the measure; the working result is.

In ordinary life

Lives with this shape

None of these people took the reading. The record of each shows the shape.

Nicholas Winton (1909 to 2015)

In the months before the Second World War, Nicholas Winton helped organize the transport of 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia to Britain, and his part in it was not publicly known until 1988, when his wife found his scrapbook of their names in the attic. A dangerous rescue carried through and then left out of public view for half a century shows the shape from outside.

Mulan (legend)

In the Ballad of Mulan, a Chinese poem thought to date from the Northern Wei period (386 to 535), Mulan takes her father's place in the army, serves twelve years without her comrades learning she is a woman, and turns down a high post at court, asking only for a swift mount to ride home. A hard and risky duty taken on for someone else, carried to its end, and left without a title shows the shape from outside.

Closest neighbor

The Good Neighbor shares three of these sides and differs on risk: its good is close to home and ordinary, while this shape goes after hard problems that carry real danger, often far away.

One side away

Each shares three sides with this shape. On the right is the side it has instead.
