The Laureate

Stabilizer Seen Self Arrive

Think of a judo student who earned every belt from white to black in front of the judges.

The shape

This shape rises by roads others have already tested, one finished step at a time, toward titles and honors given by judges whose word carries weight. A tested road is usually a crowded one, so each step means doing better than many others on it.

In ordinary life

Lives with this shape

None of these people took the reading. The record of each shows the shape.

Yi I (Yulgok) (1536 to 1584)

Yi I, the Joseon scholar known as Yulgok, passed a preliminary state examination in 1548 at thirteen and went on to take first place in nine state examinations in all, which earned him the name Gudo Jangwon Gong (the man who came first nine times). The state's own road to office, walked in order, with every result ranked by the examiners, shows the shape from outside.

Anne Shirley (fiction)

In L. M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables (1908), Anne Shirley ties for first place on the entrance pass list for Queen's Academy and later wins the Avery Scholarship, given to the graduate with the highest mark in English and English literature. A school road built by others, taken in its order, with each result posted on a list or cheered in a hall, shows the shape from outside.

Closest neighbor

The Flag Planter shares three of these sides and differs on risk: it picks a goal nobody has tested and accepts the danger of getting there, while this shape takes a road others have already proved.

One side away

Each shares three sides with this shape. On the right is the side it has instead.
